Neko Health's £299 body scan is a very good physical examination: a full-skin scan for moles, blood pressure in all four limbs, arterial stiffness, an ECG, eye pressure, grip strength and a doctor to talk it through, with a short blood panel alongside. What it is not is a blood test. Thyroid, iron, B12, vitamin D, hormones, insulin resistance, kidney and liver function, ApoB and Lp(a) are not things a scanner can see, and they are where most of the problems in a 30 to 55-year-old actually live. The short answer
Neko Health measures the outside of you and the plumbing: skin, blood pressure, arterial stiffness, heart rhythm, eye pressure, plus a handful of blood markers. A comprehensive blood panel measures the chemistry: thyroid, iron, vitamins, hormones, insulin resistance, kidney, liver, inflammation and the cardiovascular particles that predict heart disease. They answer different questions. If you can get both, get both. If you are choosing one, ask where your risk is more likely to be hiding: on the surface and in the arteries, or in the blood.

What a scan cannot tell you

A decade before HbA1c or glucose move, fasting insulin is already high. Neko can show a normal glucose to someone who is well down the road to type 2 diabetes. Insulin resistance.

Book Neko if you are in London, can get a slot, and your worry is a mole, your blood pressure, your family history of arrhythmia, or you simply want a doctor to look at you in person. It does those things better than any blood test, and the ECG and skin scan alone can justify the £299. Do not treat it as a health check on its own. The blood panel inside it is roughly what an NHS Health Check runs, and it will pass someone with a failing thyroid, a ferritin of 15, a HOMA-IR of 4 and an ApoB in the top decile without noticing.
