Why Canterbury
East Kent has some of the longest NHS waits in England, and Canterbury is where two very different groups collide over the same problem. One is the coast: Whitstable, Herne Bay, Thanet and Deal have some of the oldest populations in the South East, for whom the questions are kidney function, cardiovascular risk on the right numbers, PSA and a slowing thyroid. The other is the city itself, with two universities, a hospital and a commuter line to London, for whom the questions are energy, weight and a baseline worth having at 30. An NHS Health Check tests fewer than ten markers once every five years and answers neither. The markers that matter here are ApoB and Lp(a), which predict cardiovascular events better than cholesterol; fasting insulin and HOMA-IR, which show insulin resistance a decade before HbA1c moves; and cystatin C, PSA and the full thyroid set for the coast.
