IGF-1 blood test in the UK

An IGF-1 blood test measures insulin-like growth factor 1, made by the liver in response to growth hormone, so it reflects your average growth hormone activity. It is useful for ageing and recovery questions and for anyone using peptides or growth hormone. You can add it to TrueVitals Ultimate for £119, or get it included in Signature (£799).

What IGF-1 is

Growth hormone is released in pulses, mostly during sleep, so a single growth hormone test is almost meaningless. Growth hormone tells the liver to make IGF-1, which stays steady in the blood through the day. That makes IGF-1 the practical way to see how much growth hormone activity you have.

IGF-1 drives tissue growth and repair, muscle and bone maintenance, and it naturally falls with age.

Who it is useful for

  • People tracking ageing and longevity. IGF-1 falls with age; very low and very high levels are both linked with worse long-term outcomes.
  • Anyone using growth hormone, peptides or secretagogues. IGF-1 shows whether they are working and whether levels have been pushed too high.
  • Athletes and lifters interested in recovery and body composition.
  • People with fatigue, poor recovery or loss of muscle who want a fuller hormone picture alongside testosterone, thyroid and cortisol.

What high and low results can mean

Higher than range

  • Growth hormone or peptide use
  • Very high protein or calorie intake
  • Puberty and pregnancy
  • Rarely, a growth hormone-producing pituitary tumour (acromegaly)

Lower than range

  • Normal ageing
  • Under-eating, low protein intake or fasting
  • Liver disease or an underactive thyroid
  • Poor sleep and overtraining
  • Rarely, growth hormone deficiency

Typical ranges

IGF-1 ranges depend heavily on age and sex. A healthy 25-year-old typically runs far higher than a healthy 65-year-old. Your report uses the lab's age-matched range and shows where you sit within it.

Be honest with yourself about what this test is for

Where a private test isn't enough: if you have signs of a pituitary problem (changes in hand or shoe size, coarsening facial features, persistent headaches with vision changes), see your GP. IGF-1 helps screen, but diagnosis needs specialist testing.

A private panel is a good way to get a baseline, understand a result in context and track it over time. It does not replace your GP for symptoms, and anything that needs follow-up is flagged in plain words in your report.

Frequently asked questions

Is IGF-1 included in Ultimate?

Not as standard. Add it to Ultimate for £119, or choose Signature, which includes it.

Can I test growth hormone directly instead?

A single growth hormone test is not useful because levels swing up and down through the day. IGF-1 is the standard way to assess growth hormone activity.

Should I fast for IGF-1?

It is not essential for IGF-1, but Ultimate includes fasting insulin and glucose, so an overnight fast gives the best overall result.

I use peptides. What IGF-1 level is too high?

Your report shows where you sit against the age-matched range. Persistently running above range carries risks, so it is worth discussing with the clinician supervising your treatment.

Does IGF-1 fall with age?

Yes, steadily from early adulthood. That is why results are always compared with an age-matched range.

Can I add IGF-1 with a home visit?

Yes. IGF-1 can be taken by a nurse at home: Ultimate + IGF-1 with a home visit is £547.
