This is the single most common reason people test privately. Your GP ran 10 to 15 markers, everything was "in range," and you were sent home. But the markers they excluded (ferritin ordered in only 9.4% of fatigue requests, Free T3 almost never tested, fasting insulin not available on the NHS) are often where the answer lives. The NHS tests when something is wrong. Private testing measures when everything feels fine, establishing a baseline so future changes are visible as trends. On the NHS, your GP decides which markers to test based on clinical guidelines and their assessment of your symptoms. You cannot request specific tests. Private testing puts the choice in your hands. If you want ApoB, Lp(a), fasting insulin, free testosterone, and thyroid antibodies, you can test them. You don't need to justify your interest or convince a gatekeeper.

An NHS result letter says "ferritin: 28 µg/L (range 15-300). Normal." A comprehensive private report explains that 28 is technically in range but below the optimal threshold for energy and hair health, and analyses it alongside your thyroid, inflammation, and vitamin markers to identify whether it's an isolated finding or part of a broader pattern. The depth of interpretation determines whether the data is actionable.
Finger-prick home kits with few markers. Some providers sell finger-prick kits with 5 to 10 markers for £50 to £80. The sample volume is small, failure rates are higher (you may need to redo the test), and the marker coverage is barely broader than what a GP would order for free. If you're going to pay, pay for depth. Otherwise, ask your GP.
Tests for conditions that don't exist. "Adrenal fatigue panels" and "food intolerance" IgG tests are sold widely but test for conditions the medical establishment does not recognise. Dashboards without interpretation. A traffic-light dashboard showing green, amber, and red dots next to individual marker values is not worth paying for. The NHS gives you the same thing for free (a list of numbers with "normal" or "abnormal"). The value of private testing is in the depth of interpretation: cross-system pattern analysis, optimal vs reference ranges, and specific actionable recommendations.
Suspiciously cheap "comprehensive" panels. If a provider claims 100+ markers for £99, check the fine print. Some count individual components of a full blood count (haemoglobin, haematocrit, MCH, MCV, RDW etc.) as separate "biomarkers" to inflate the number. Compare what's actually tested, not the marketing number.
Prices vary enormously depending on the number of markers, the sample method (finger-prick vs venous), and whether interpretation is included.

Most GPs will review private blood test results. However, there are important nuances.
Venous blood draws from accredited laboratories are significantly more likely to be accepted than finger-prick home kits. The sample volume, collection method, and laboratory accreditation all affect how seriously a GP treats the results. If your GP tested basics and said everything is normal but you still feel unwell: yes, private testing is worth it. The markers your GP excluded are almost certainly where the answer lives. This is the most common and most valuable use case for private blood testing.
If you want a proactive health baseline: yes. The NHS does not offer comprehensive proactive screening. Private testing is the only way to establish a baseline that captures metabolic, hormonal, thyroid, cardiovascular, and nutritional health simultaneously.
If you only need one marker: ask your GP first. If they won't do it, a single-marker private test (£15 to £40) is sufficient. You don't need a comprehensive panel for one question.
