Troponin T blood test in the UK

A high-sensitivity troponin T test measures a protein released when heart muscle cells are under strain or damaged. Hospitals use it to diagnose heart attacks. In people who feel well, a level at the top of the normal range is linked to higher future heart risk. Troponin T is included in TrueVitals Signature (£799). If you have chest pain now, call 999.

What troponin T shows

Troponin T is part of the machinery that makes heart muscle contract. Tiny amounts leak into the blood all the time, and modern high-sensitivity tests can measure them. Larger amounts appear when heart muscle is injured.

Outside an emergency, a low but measurable level tells you something about long-term strain on the heart. Large studies link higher levels within the normal range to more future heart problems, independent of cholesterol and blood pressure.

What can raise troponin T

Heart causes

  • Heart attack (an emergency)
  • Heart failure or a thickened heart muscle
  • Inflammation of the heart muscle (myocarditis)
  • Fast or irregular heart rhythms

Other causes

  • Reduced kidney function
  • Very long endurance events, such as a marathon, in the days before
  • High blood pressure over many years
  • Severe illness or infection

Who it is useful for

  • People with a strong family history of heart disease who want the fullest risk picture.
  • Long-standing high blood pressure or diabetes, where silent strain is possible.
  • Endurance athletes wanting a resting baseline (test well away from a hard event).
  • Anyone with raised ApoB or Lp(a) building a complete heart profile.

How it fits with your other results

Signature reads troponin T with ApoB, Lp(a), small dense LDL, homocysteine, hs-CRP, kidney function and the full lipid profile. If you want to look at heart strain more directly, NT-proBNP can be added to Ultimate.

Be honest with yourself about what this test is for

This is not an emergency test. If you have chest pain, pressure or tightness, pain spreading to your arm, jaw or back, or sudden breathlessness, call 999. Results from a private panel take days and must never be used to decide whether chest pain is serious.

A private panel is a good way to get a baseline, understand a result in context and track it over time. It does not replace your GP for symptoms, and anything that needs follow-up is flagged in plain words in your report.

Frequently asked questions

Is troponin included in Ultimate?

No. Troponin T is included in Signature. Ultimate includes ApoB, Lp(a) and hs-CRP, and NT-proBNP can be added for £109.

Can a private troponin test rule out a heart attack?

No. Heart attacks are diagnosed in hospital with repeated troponin tests over a few hours and an ECG. If you have symptoms now, call 999.

Does exercise raise troponin?

Yes. Long or very hard endurance exercise can raise troponin for a day or two. Avoid hard training for two days before your test.

What is a normal troponin T level?

High-sensitivity troponin T is usually reported in ng/L against a cut-off of around 14 ng/L. Your report uses the lab's own range and explains where your result sits.

Does kidney function affect troponin?

Yes. Reduced kidney function can raise troponin T, which is why Signature reports it alongside creatinine, cystatin C and eGFR.
